Story:

Text provided by the architects:

The building site is in Strömsö, a 320-hectare island situated between Tammisaari and Inkoo and only an hour’s drive from Helsinki. The site is a slope, the buildings are arranged to offer unobstructed views from the main building to the sea.

The brief was to design a leisure-time home for all seasons and a sauna building with additional guest house capacity. Spacious rooms for three generations and maximized views were also on top of the list.

The main building is a sculptural two-storied volume. The volume is bent in the middle around a terrace. Above the terrace is a sheltered outdoor space. The sauna is on the shoreline, with easy access to swim in the sea.

The buildings are constructed of wood. The dark treatment of the facades camouflages the shapes into the surrounding spruce forest. The interiors are simply light-colored wood, enhancing the sculptural quality of the spaces.
